NU-USC TO BE SHOWCASED AGAIN
ABC announced that NU vs. USC will be shown in prime time, a 7 p.m. kickoff on Saturday Sept. 15th. It is one of 5 such Saturday night feature games planned. Others: Sept. 1 Tennessee @ Cal, Oct. 6th Notre Dame @ UCLA, Nov. 10th USC @ Cal, Dec. 1 Big XII Championship.
CROUCH STILL FIGHTING FOR HIS DREAM
Toronto Argonauts will start training camp next week with Eric Crouch listed as their no. 2 QB. They run a pressing style offense that mandates a run threat from the QB. Their first stringer, Damon Allen, is 43 years old and must prove he can still play. Crouch played in 3 games last season for Toronto before suffering a season ending shoulder injury. He is now 100%. The Lincoln Journal Star quoted Crouch, "I'm trying to win that starting spot...I'm not there to sit on the bench and hope we win. I would like to be the quarterback that helps win games and win a Grey Cup this year." Crouch was drafted in the 3rd round by the St. Louis Rams in 2002 to play receiver. He walked out of training camp after not being given a shot at QB. Later he had 2 tries at making the Packers but was released. In his final NFL attempt, he played for the Chiefs NFL Europe team in 2005 and was released after the season.
HUSKERS IN THE 2007 NFL DRAFT
Adam Carriker, round 1, 13th pick, St. Louis Rams, likely to play Defensive Tackle. Carriker believes playing under former pro coaches will help his adjustment to the pro's. He said, " A lot of the guys at the Senior Bowl complained about the pace of practices I thought it was kind of slow compared to what I was used to."
Brandon Jackson, round 2, 63rd pick, Green Bay Packers, running back to replace departed former Husker Ahman Green. Brandon grew up watching fellow Mississippian Bret Favre and is eager to join him in the Packers back field. He certainly appears justified now in his decision to have left NU early for the NFL.
Steward Bradley, round 3, 87th pick, Philadelphia Eagles, linebacker.
Jay Moore, round 4, 104th pick, San Francisco, end.
NU was just one of seven schools across the country to have 4 or more players selected in the first 104 picks: Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Penn State, Tennessee, and Texas.
Four other non drafted Huskers signed free agent contracts: Zac Taylor and Matt Herian both with Tampa Bay, Ola Dagunduro with Dallas, and Barry Cryer with San Diego.
Dane Todd, NU's stellar student fullback did not get a free agent offer. He was quoted in the Lincoln Journal Star, "I am just going to call it good football-wise...I'm not going to put the rest of my life on hold to go chase a pipe dream." He will attend medical school at either UNMC or Emory University (located next to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta). He has been accepted to both schools.
THE LAST 5 NU RUNNING BACK DRAFTEE'S
From the Lincoln Journal Star:
2001 Dan Alexander, 6th round, Tennessee Titans, now playing in the Arena Football League with the Nashville Kats.
2001 Correll Buckhalter, 4th round, Philadelphia Eagles, still playing with the Eagles and has gained nearly 2,000 yards and scored 14 TD's.
1998 Ahman Green, 3rd round, now playing with the Houston Texans after several 1,000 yard seasons with the Packers.
1996 Lawrence Phillips, 1st round, St. Louis Rams, problems with the law sidelined Lawrence. (Do you think the Rams would be leery of drafting NU players by now!?).
1994 Calvin Jones, 3rd round, Oakland Raiders, never achieved a starting role with the Raiders.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO...?
On the subject of old NU running backs, harken back to the mid 1980's when walk-ons were still plentiful on the depth charts. Ken Kaelin from Westerville Nebraska became the starting fullback in 1986 for his senior campaign. It wasn't an easy road to the top for Ken. Like most small town Nebraska boys, he grew up dreaming of becoming a Husker. He walked on to Nebraska and had a goal of being on the starting punt team by his 5th year. There were 10 fullbacks in the program his Junior and Senior seasons. A guy named Tom Rathman was one year ahead of Ken. Ken was pulled aside early in his second year by coach Solich and told that maybe it would be a good idea if he concentrated on school (i.e. quit). Ken was crushed - but determined that they would have to clear out his locker before he would go away. And so he worked hard, lived in the weight room, learned his play book, and hung out with a good set of guys. He was a member of what some teammates mocked as "The God Squad," referring to Ken's group of Christian football friends. Ken recalls the confrontations that sometimes occurred when he and his "God Squad"ers would basically be laughed at as sissy's. Ken's response would be to point out that the revered and respected head coach shared the "sissy" perspective on life - which would usually quiet the antagonists. And speaking to Ken recently, he remarked about how many of those who once were part of the wild crowd, were now also "sissy's" so to speak - and what a better world it is for the leadership that stood firm in front of young men and pointed them in the right direction. A direction that they sometimes wouldn't turn toward until many years later. If you know Ken, you know he is anything but a sissy. He is a little like Billy Graham meets the WWF. Ken ended up an integral part of the 1986 explosive Husker backfield that included Steve Taylor and Keith "End Zone" Jones. Ken is now a very successful business owner in Omaha where he runs 2 Hobbytown stores, one of which is one of the top Hobbytowns in the whole USA. He has two children and a wonderful wife. His son is 14 and has been weight training for a couple years and loves football. Ken attributes his success in life to a verse he learned to live by as a young man: "...Those who honor Me I will honor.."
